“After receiving the Parkinson’s diagnosis, I did a large amount of research to learn the best things to do and what to expect. By far the best overall single thing we could do was exercise. Soon after, SCS started the Rock Steady Program. We came to Rock Steady Boxing for exercise- both physical and mental. What we did not expect were all the other benefits. We met people that we never would have met. It is like a family with helpfulness, knowledge, a light but “serious” air, and all sharing each other’s journeys. We found that we weren’t the only ones with the symptoms and struggles. We learned how to better handle Parkinson’s as far as the ups and downs. There is no judgment in this group, and we cheer for success and encourage each other when things get difficult. Everyone is advised to work at their own level every day and no day seems to be the same!”

“I have been a member here for over 10 years. I decided to try it out because they had a special deal going on and I’m glad I did! The other members, staff, and exercise is what keeps me here. My favorite part about the center is the pool because I’ve always wanted to swim. This facility is a great place, and I will always talk it up!”

“I have been here for about 4 years now. I originally was a member at the Y but then my friend showed me this facility, and that’s when I became an SCS member. Coming here has given me something more to do and I’ve met so many people here. SCS offers so many different things like social activities, trips, choir, cards, grief sessions, and more. One program that has stuck out to me was the Coping with Greif program which is for those that have experienced a loss in their life. Even some of the leaders themselves have experienced loss and this program offers a place to cope and grieve together.”

“I cannot remember how many years ago that I started going to the center, but it was somewhere around 15-16. I do remember I decided I needed to do something to get more movement in my life. So, I started off by using SCS’ pool as I loved the water. One day I asked the water volleyball group if I could play. I absolutely fell in love with it and have played twice a week ever since. They did not care how you looked in your bathing suit or how much skill you had. After a while one of the trainers suggested to me that I try the wellness side to further my physical fitness. So, I tried that and surprisingly loved that. So now I do the wellness side three days a week and the pool five days a week. Of course, I miss a day here and there, but I kept the promise to myself to make it a priority in my life and health. So far as I am concerned SCS is the best kept asset to Lima.”

“It has been 13 years since I first became a member. Some of my friends suggested it so that I could come and travel with them but then I realized that SCS had so much more. The pool was another big part that drew me in. I love this place, I appreciate the personal trainers, I love the choir and its comradery, and of course I love the trips. SCS is my whole social life and I’m proud to be a member!”
